Dashing through the snow,
in a one horse open slay! The comics adaption of the hit television show
continues as the Yuletide rolls into Sunnydale. A puzzling heat wave is
the least of Buffy's concerns when she realizes she does not possess the
monetary means to afford the holiday season (or a new dress for the Winter
Dance!). To add insult to injury, she is forced to get a job in the mall
to pay for her expenditures. All would be well, though, if she didn't have
to wear a paper hat and if her employer wasn't quite so "cold" toward her
. . . Hector Gomez, artist of October's Buffy: The Dust Waltz graphic novel,
steps in for this special fill in!
Jeffy says:
Yeah!
Willow and Cordelia look different. I like this ice story.
It is just the way things happen on the Hellmouth in Sunnydale. We
finally see Angel for the first time. I like it that they went ice
skating together.
Overall
score: 7/10

Art:
4/5 We have a new artist!! All of the characters look great,
with the exception of Oz. He looked really funky throughout most
of the comic, and there was no similarity to Seth Green. Buffy looks
wonderful though, and it's very easy to tell the difference between Willow
and Cordelia. Angel, Giles, and Xander look like the actors on the
show and the detail on the ice monster was very impressive.
Cover:
4/5 Looks just like Buffy and Angel and it get extra points for having
Buffy and Angel on there together.
Story:
5/5 Angel finally shows up! It was nice to have the ice skating
scene with Buffy and Angel (though they always get interrupted!!
Remember What's My Line Pt.1?) and to see them fighting side by side against
the ice creature. The overall story was really creative and it's
to know that the comics, like the show, will have creatures other than
vampires for their villains. The best part of this comic has to be
when Cordelia says "My mall, my beautiful mall," after it is destroyed
by the ice monster. Classic Buffy!!

score: 4.5/5

Happy New Year

This New Year's Eve is
going to be one to remember for the town of Sunnydale. When a cursed Puritan
rolls into town, looking to break a hex placed on him centuries before,
trouble follows: in the form of a giant Hellhound! Mania and mayhem ensue!
Continue the adventures of the hit television show every month from Dark
Horse Comics.
Jeffy says:
The
New Year is here and so is more evil. Cordelia shows some thinking
and aiming skills when she sharpshoots a beast attacking Buffy. I
have a question though: Does Oz ever tuck in his shirts?
I don't think so. I can't imagine Willow ever being that angry at
Buffy. I was disappointed in the ending. What happened to Nathaniel
and his dog? Why had the dog never caught him before? This
story felt unfinished.
Overall
score: 4/10
Anna says:
Art:
5/5 Everyone still looks great and even Oz looks better. I'm
becoming more and more impressed with Gomez's art. The detail on
the hound was great and I just love that the characters look like they
do on the show.
Cover:
5/5 Another nicely done cover of Buffy, though it doesn't have much
to do with the story.
Story:
3.5/5 A very entertaining story, though the stuff with Willow refusing
to speak to Buffy kind of bugged me because I just don't think Willow would
get mad at Buffy for having to beat up werewolf Oz; I mean Willow has shot
him before. It just didn't seem very Willowish. Having another
non-vamp story was nice and this one was very interesting and original,
but I thought the end didn't really explain what happened. Did the
guy and the dog die? I wish I knew!
Overall
score: 4/5

New Kid on the Block -

With spring in the air
and a day off from school, the gang decides to have a get together. Harboring
thoughts of an all-night, all-girl slumber party, Willow's new gal-pal,
Cynthia, volunteers to coordinate it. The only problem is whom to invite.
Buffy's in. Cordelia, too. What about Xander? Eight ladies, all in their
pajamas. One way or another, Xander's going to make it!
Jeffy says:
A
new friend for the gang but is she really their friend? New girls
never last either. Cute scene between Angel and Buffy. They
make such a great fighting team. I liked the ending with Buffy saying,
"Come on in," to a bunch of vampires unknowingly.
Overall
score: 8/10
Anna says:
Art:
3.5/5 Most of the characters still look good, but Oz looks really
weird again. I guess Gomez has trouble drawing him. At a few
points I had trouble telling the difference between Buffy and Cynthia,
but Cynthia's freckles helped to distinguish her from Buffy.
Cover:
5/5 Great picture of all the characters, not that it has any bearing
on the story, but it looks awesome.
Story:
5/5 Great story! I love Cordelia's jealously of Xander and Cynthia's
friendship and Xander's desperate need to go to the slumber party.
I thought it was a great twist that Buffy invited the pizza guy into the
house and he turns out to be a vamp, with lots of pals. The scene
with Buffy and Angel reading from "Romeo & Juliet" was perfect!!

score: 4.5/5
