Through five seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I have only had eyes for one character - Alexander Lavelle Harris. He is witty, loyal and a valuable member of the Scooby Gang, but he has become more of a background character during the last three seasons, allowing other characters to shine and develop. Fans have waited with baited breath for more Xander-oriented story lines, and can't help wondering when they will come. I know that I have.

Xander is, inarguably, the heart of the Scooby Gang. Despite his lack of a "super power," he is always ready to protect or save a friend. When Sunday targeted Buffy, it was Xander who helped her find Sunday's lair and backed her up. He was the only member of the Scooby gang to go back into the Initiative House to save Buffy and Riley. In fact, Xander fights without personal regard to his safety, which only makes me love him more.

Xander has saved Buffy's life countless times, even though she may not always be aware of it. During "Prophecy Girl," he gave Buffy CPR after she was drowned. During "The Zeppo," he convinced Jack to dismantle the bomb in the basement of the school, and saved Buffy, Willow and Giles from being blown up while fighting the Sisterhood of Jhe. Xander knows what the odds facing him are, and he fights. He is at times self-deprecatory; he has been known to say, "I laugh in the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away." This is completely untrue! He is always willing to face danger at Buffy's side, even when Giles and Willow aren't.

In fact, Xander's self-deprecatory wit humanizes him. He knows he has faults, and unlike Buffy, he does admit them. Xander is the wisecracking guy-next-door, and this makes him stand out among the slayers, watchers and witches. He normalcy at times isolates him from the other members of the Scooby gang, but his courage more than makes up for it.

But really, why do I love Xander so much? Why not Riley, or Spike for that matter? Riley had super powers, and Spike is a vampire. They will never be the Joe Normal's that Xander is. But Xander isn't really a Joe Normal, especially in Sunnydale. Unlike the town that would rather deny any demonic activity, Xander's eyes are opened to what Sunnydale really is -- a Hellmouth. Despite this, he is still the guy-next-door. But more than that, he is the guy that is always there, supporting you either vocally or silently. He isn't afraid to tell you the truth, even though it may not be what you want to hear. Unfortunately, because he is a constant source of support, he does get taken for granted. His screen time dwindles, until his appearances on screen are only shadows of their former selves. He is an invaluable member of the Scooby gang, even though he has insecurities about his position.

During any situation, Xander is always ready with a witty remark, whether or not it lightens the mood. I know how great Xander is in the role of comedic relief, which is mainly the role he is serving now. I want to see him deal with meatier issues. I want to see him develop his character on screen more. As stated on the Key Guy Campaign web site, I "know that this isn't 'Xander the Vampire Slayer.'" I understand that there is a limit to how much screen time Xander can have, but I still want to see more of him. He needs his chance to shine in the limelight of the Hellmouth!
