Waiting in the Wings
Waiting in the Wings

-- Quotes --

Written by Kristina

Wes is looking up a demon that Cordy had in a vision, when they begin discussing Fred. Wesley wants to ask her out, but he wants to wait for the right time. Cordy tells him he had better strike soon, and laments that the only action she gets is from a ghost who is good with a loofah. Angel walks in, pleased with himself, because they will be going out - he got the tickets. Meanwhile, Fred and Gunn are walking into the hotel, after eating breakfast together, when Gunn tells Fred she's gorgeous. She is clearly affected by this, but Gunn doesn't notice. Instead, he spots Angel with the tickets, and tells Angel he will cover the cost. Mahta Hari is the best band in LA, and he wants them all to see them; however, Angel bought tickets to see a ballet. Giselle, in fact. Performed by the same company (Blinnikov World Ballet Corps) that he saw it in 1890. Gunn says he's lost all trust in Angel, but Cordy and everyone else are in.

The manager of the theatre where the ballet is going to be performed is extremely excited. Even more so, when a man (a Count in fact) says that it is going to be a performance of a lifetime.

Cordy takes Fred dress shopping. The guys are all going to be wearing tuxes, so they have to be dressed up as well. Fred is clearly uncomfortable. Cordy decides to talk to Fred about Wes, but Fred mistakenly thinks she is talking about Gunn.

Later that night, Lorne is cleaning baby spit up off the back of Angel's tux. Connor is sleeping soundly, and while Angel was singing Connor's lullaby, Lorne read Angel, and knows he has feelings for Cordelia. Angel tries to deny it, but is stopped when Cordy walks in, looking ravishing. She is ready for a night of excitement, and being young and sophisticated.

Meanwhile, Gunn is delaying coming out into public in his tux. Fred is all done up, and waiting for Gunn to emerge. She finally coaxes him out, and they both look at each other, taking in how great the other looks. Wesley comes in, not looking shabby himself, and puts a coat around Fred's shoulders. Angel and Cordy come downstairs, and before they leave, Cordy tells Wes the "iron is hot."

The gang arrives at the ballet, and settles into their seats. As the lights dim, we see the Count settle into his box as well.

Later. Cordy is snoring, asleep on Angel's shoulder while Gunn is enthralled by the ballet. Wesley keeps sneaking glances at Fred between dances. Angel watches the prima ballerina, when something suddenly clicks in his memory. The cheering and clapping at intermission rouses Cordy from her sleep. They head out to the lobby, where Gunn cannot stop gushing about the performance. Wesley asks Angel if much has changed since he last saw it, and Angel says that nothing has changed - the dancers are even the same. Possibilities fly, including the fact that the dancers could be vampires. Angel decides to go backstage to check it out. He sends the others back to their seats, but Cordy decides to come with him.

Angel and Cordy get past the security guard blocking the backstage entrance after Angel knocks the security guard out. When they get backstage, they see it goes on… forever. They decide to go get the others, but the door has disappeared. The hallway stretches on forever in both directions. They hear a soft sobbing, and follow the sound. A door is ajar, and they enter the prima ballerina's dressing room. It is opulent, and cluttered with costumes, jewelry and cosmetics. The room is warm, and Cordy knows that someone would always meet her here. She picks up a beautiful cross necklace, then asks Angel to undress her. He struggles with what she has just said, but then she is herself again. Angel is now possessed, and Cordy is repossessed. They come together, and they can't keep their hands to themselves. They want… no, they need each other. They are still kissing, when Cordy brings her hand up (the hand with the cross) to Angel's face. The cross brushes Angel's face, and brings him back to the present. He and Cordy try to leave the room before they completely give into the feelings of lust they are experiencing. Outside the room, Angel deduces spirits trapped in time possessed them.

Lorne tucks Connor into bed, singing him a lullaby. An unseen presence is in the hotel, and Lorne picks up a battle-axe and goes to investigate. He doesn't get very far, because the presence enters the room. Lorne is shocked.

Angel and Cordy are walking down the hallway, when Cordy realizes she said something important. The prima ballerina had a secret lover, and Angel thinks that is the reason why they are stuck there. Cordy says they have to go back into the room, and find out more. As long as Angel doesn't get a happy, no problems. Angel isn't thrilled with this plan, because he has feelings for Cordy.

Gunn and Wesley's hands slowly inch towards Fred's knees, until Fred realizes Angel and Cordy haven't come back. They've been gone far too long, and she says they should go find them. Gunn doesn't want to go, because he will miss the end of the ballet.

Angel and Cordy are back in the dressing room, but nothing is happening. They are both wooden and rushing through the part of the re-enactment that they know. They kiss - a microkiss - and Angel begins to say that maybe it only works once. Cordy kisses him passionately.

Fred, Gunn and Wes come across the knocked out security guard. In the distance, two figures sneak through the hallway. In his box, the Count tells one of his henchmen to deal with "them."

In the dressing room, Angel and Cordy are all over each other. Cordy (as the ballerina) tells Angel (as Stefan) that she fears Kurskov, because he has power to make things difficult for them. Stefan doesn't hear her, and they continue to kiss passionately on the divan. Angel slides Cordy's dress off her shoulders, when suddenly, one of Kurskov's lackeys interrupts them. His face is painted to resemble a comedy mask - forever smiling. Angel knocks the lackey of the room, and he and Cordy (dress back in place) escape from the room. In the hallway, the lackeys attack Wes, Fred and Gunn, and Gunn is stabbed in the back. Fred cries out in anguish.

Angel takes care of the lackeys that come after him and Cordy, while Wesley manages the other lackeys. Fred helps Gunn to bind his wound. She is clearly distressed by the possibility that he is seriously hurt. The tension between them builds, and they come closer together. They kiss. Unbeknownst to them, Wesley sees them. His face is reflected in a mirror, and the anguish in his face is apparent. He turns, and falls to his knees. He is full of rage.

Cordy and Angel finally come across Fred and Gunn. They tell what they have learned about the Prima Ballerina. She had a lover, but she was afraid of what the Count would do to her if he found out. He had some type of power. Wesley walks in, and says the Count is a wizard. He was obsessed with the ballerina, and he pulled her out of time so she could dance for him forever. Apparently Wesley hit his own hot spot. He says if they can distract the Count, Angel could destroy his power source, and put the ballerina back into time. Angel goes to find the Count, when they notice the lackeys are coming back to life… and splitting in two. Reality shifts temporarily, and Wesley realizes that creating more lackeys drains the Count's power. They have to make as many lackeys as they can, in order to give Angel a chance to destroy the power source. Fighting ensues.

Angel arrives in the wings of the stage, where he finally comes across the Prima Ballerina. He tells her that it is up to her to stop the dancing. She has to change her dance, and this change will cause the Count to lose his power. She is not sure she can do it, but she wants the dancing to stop. Resolved, she dances onto the stage, towards a waiting gentleman. Instead of continuing to him, she changes the choreography, and moves away. The dancers begin to fade. Angel arrives in the Count's box, and destroys his jeweled medal - his power source. The Count begins gasping for breath, and his proclaims how unfair this all is. Angel tells him to start a web site. Angel turns to the stage, where the grateful ballerina takes one last bow before disappearing. Confused, the audience leaves.

Back at the hotel, Wesley is stitching up Gunn. Angel and Cordy are talking in a corner. Angel begins to tell Cordy about his feelings for her, when she stops listening to him. The Groosalug is back. She runs into his waiting arms. Lorne tells Angel that after the political upheaval in Pylea, Groo was eventually deposed. He came looking for his princess. Angel goes upstairs to check on Connor. Fred approaches Wesley. She tells him that she always thought Cordy and Angel would get together. You can never tell, she says. Wesley agrees, clearly thinking of her.
