Long Day's Journey
Long Day's Journey

-- Quotes --

Written by Kristina

Angel is up in his room, sketching pictures of the Beast (last time he displayed this obsessive behavior, it was over Darla. And we all know what good came of *that*), when Lorne comes up with some blood for him. He tries to entice Angel to come downstairs, but no such luck. Angel's in full out brood mode, and Connor and Cordelia's little liaison is bugging him more than he'll let on. Before leaving, Lorne reminds Angel that there are other fish in the sea.

Gwen Raiden (the electrically inclined thief from "Ground State") is hanging around a dark oil field, when her client, Mr. Ashet shows up. He had wanted her to locate extremely rare and powerful amulets for him, but because of the recent events (rain of fire), Gwen is leaving for Tahiti. Before he can explain anything more, the Beast punches through Mr. Ashet's chest from behind. The Beast also hits Gwen, and she lands in a crumpled heap as the Beast rips its hand back out of Mr. Ashet. Bright white light streams from Ashet as he falls to the ground and the Beast pulls a metallic object from Ashet's chest. Gwen begins to take off her gloves (in an attempt to electrify the Beast) but he is gone when she looks up.

Cordelia wakes up to see Connor sitting by his window, listening to sirens. She slept on the floor, leaving the bed to Connor. But he couldn't sleep - actually, he didn't want to sleep in the bed without her. Cordy reminds Connor that this isn't his fault, but Connor ignores her. He wants to go to the hotel to see Angel. They need to find out if the group has found out anything new about the Beast. Cordy tries to avoid making a decision - she doesn't want Connor to know that Angel knows they slept together. She says that they would have been told if anything new was discovered about the Beast. Cordy finally gets up, and begins looking through supplies. Connor starts talking about his super powers - his super hearing, his ability to walk without making noise - makes you wonder where he got it from. They are both going a little bit nuts, being cooped up together for two days. Connor immediately assumes they haven't been to the hotel because everyone thinks he is connected to the Beast. Cordy finally tells Connor the truth - Angel knows they slept together.

Connor is shocked. He doesn't believe they've done anything wrong, but that doesn't change how Angel feels about it. They hurt him. Suddenly, Cordy's eyes go wide, and she sees a flash of the Beast. She hears screams. Freaked out, she grabs her jacket, and goes to see Angel. As she leaves, she tells Connor that she trusts him (Connor wants to know if she thinks he's going to run off and join the Beast).

Gunn is pacing as Fred is trying to do research. Gunn doesn't trust Connor - he sent Angel to the bottom of the ocean. Fred tries to convince Gunn that the White Room girl was evil - and when she said "the answer is among you" it didn't necessarily mean Connor. Gunn isn't buying it - Connor's gone against the Beast twice, and come away with barely any injuries. Wesley walks in, and says that they've all faced the Beast twice, and they are still around. Wesley has found out some information about the White Room girl - Mesektet - and without her, Wolfram and Hart has been cut off from the senior partners. But that wasn't her only function - she also was one of five powerful beings linked to the ancient god Ra. Fred has really opened up to Wesley with all this brainstorming and Gunn walks over to put an arm around her. Fred doesn't react to this. Mesektet was a totem of the order of Ra-tet. Fred runs over to the computer to do some more research, and suggests that Gunn gives Angel an update.

Lorne enters, and says that the Beast has been linked to another killing - a white magic shaman. He ripped her heart right out. Wesley isn't sure that the modus operandi matches - Mesektet had energy taken from her. Fred asks Lorne if the lady's name was Ma'at, and when he confirms that it was, Gunn suggests that the Beast is taking out the members of the Ra-tet. Wesley says they can't assume anything yet. Fred agrees with him, and when she begins talking about two points, Wesley finishes her sentence that the two points make a line, not a pattern. Gunn notices this, but says nothing. At this point, Cordy walks into the hotel. She stares at them, before saying she's got to go see Angel. She heads up the stairs, and Gunn remarks on how weird Connor has made her.

Angel is upstairs looking at his drawings, when Cordy knocks. She wants to be invited in, because that is the polite thing to do. When Angel tells her to go away, she walks in anyways. Angel's in a snit still, and he wants Cordy to stop pretending that she cares about his feelings. Cordy tells Angel to get over it - to move on. She tries to tell him about her vision, but he is hung up on being told to get over it. Cordy apologizes for hurting Angel, but she tells him that he has to move on - there are bigger things at stake and Connor needs him. Angel calms down, and asks her about her vision.

In the vision, Cordy felt like she was inside of someone, listening to them talk. She didn't know who she was inside of nor did she know if it was the past or the future. Angel is skeptical about this vision - Cordy thinks it means the line between them and TPTB is still open, but Angel can't believe anyone is up there watching them. Cordy reminds him that she was.

The Angel Investigations team has gathered in the lobby. Angel's giving them a pep talk - TPTB are sending them a wake up call. Sure, they've been beaten and demoralized, but they are on the offensive. They need to find out the Beast's weaknesses and fight smart. Everyone has an Achilles' heel. When Gunn brings up the fact that they don't have any leads, Angel looks up at the doors in surprise. It's Gwen. Gwen enters the lobby, and remembers Gunn. Fred protectively stands in front of him. Angel goes to introduce Cordy to Gwen, but Cordy remembers her. She was watching down from her higher plane. Gwen wants to know if the world is going to end. She tells them that she met with a client last night in the oil fields. It was odd, because she had been working for him for six years, and never met with him before. While they were talking, his chest was punched out by a demon with a head of rock. She begins describing the demon to a rapt audience. Wesley asks if anything was removed from the client's body, but Gwen lies and says she didn't see. Fred picks up the book she was looking in, and asks if the client was a saber-toothed tiger, or composed of light. Gwen says that light came out of his chest. This confirms the pattern the group was looking at earlier - the Beast is killing members of the Ra-tet. Three of the totems have been killed, which leaves Manjet and Semkhet. Angel announces that their plan is to find Semkhet and to protect him - and that he's taking Gwen with him. He'll catch her up along the way.

Death Valley. Angel and Gwen are climbing into Semkhet's cave - Angel makes it down noisily, and catches Gwen after she loses her balance. They hear a noise from within the cave, and they both head in. They round a corner and find Semkhet - lying on the floor, all eviscerated. The Beast beat them there. Angel doesn't know why the Beast is executing the totems, but a short man comes out from the shadows and says that he knows. The Beast wants to turn out the sun.

Introductions are made, and Manny (aka Manjet) reveals that he is the last living totem. He was in Belize until he heard that Mesektet was killed. And when he said the Beast was going to turn out the sun, he meant that the Beast wanted to blot out the sun - completely. When the totems are all dead, the Beast needs to perform a ritual, and the city will descend into never-ending night. Los Angeles becomes a demon playground, and then the darkness spreads until it is global. Manny goes to leave - he knows he isn't much longer for this world. Angel won't let him go though - he says that they will protect him.

Gwen and Angel have brought Manny back to the hotel. The Beast hasn't shown himself yet. Fred looks at Manny, and remarks that he doesn't look like Semkhet. Angel introduces him to a surprised gang. When Manny heads off to use the washroom, that gang wants to know if it is true - that the Beast is planning to blot out the sun. Angel confirms that Manny isn't joking. They keep Manny away from the Beast, and the lights don't go out. It will buy them time to figure out a way to defeat the Beast. Fred says they need a small controlled place to keep Manny. Gwen knows of a place. Cordy thinks this plan is "great" (note the use of sarcastic quote marks). She's convinced that Gwen lives in a non-descript tenement downtown, with discarded boxes in stairwells, peeling plaster and the faint smell of dead people.

Gwen leads them into a non-descript tenement, matching Cordy's description. Angel reminds Cordy that she didn't have to come. Cordy thought it would be best to be with Angel, in case she had another vision. Manny knows the Beast is powerful, since he is able to take out the Ra-tet. Gunn wants to know what is up with Manny - why isn't he all mighty and colossal? Manny says he is the midday totem - the neutral totem representing the potential of every human soul. He is also immortal, unless he is ritually murdered. Cordy is pretty sure this is the type of place that Manny will be ritually murdered, until she steps inside of Gwen's lavish and spacious apartment. Angel tells Cordy that after he used the Axis of Pythia to find her, he gave it back to Gwen. They head over to the study, and Gwen pulls a book out of a bookshelf. The shelf moves away to reveal a steel vault - it is panic room, and that's where they are going to be keeping Manny. They decide to keep watch in shifts - Gunn and Gwen take the first four hour shift.

On their shift, Gwen is telling Gunn her life story. He is staring into the distance, preoccupied. He's been thinking. Gwen tells him that he's already apologized for killing him. When Gunn says that isn't it, she says it must be the English guy (Wesley). She's seen how he looks at Fred. She wants to know when things between Gunn and Fred changed. Gunn says it is a long story, and that is when Cordy and Angel come to relieve the two. Gwen takes Gunn to where he can sleep. Cordy and Angel sit down with their coffee and blood (respectively). Cordy thinks it'll be good to have this time alone - they could talk. Angel suggests they don't.

Gwen and Gunn are trying to wake up Angel and Cordy - they both fell asleep on their watch. Angel jumps up, and goes to check on Manny - his blood and gore have been smeared over the walls. The Beast got him.

The only people that were in the room when Manny was killed were Cordy and Angel. Someone drugged the drinks they had made - for themselves. The Beast took the orb from Manny, and if they don't figure out where he is going, and fast, the world is going to be plunged into eternal darkness. Suddenly, Angel realizes that Gwen knows more than she is telling. She finally admits that she saw the Beast take a metal box out of her client. Gunn assumes that maybe it wasn't the Beast who did this - maybe it was Connor. Angel tells Gunn to call Wes and Fred and let them know about the "toy surprises" inside each of the totems. They head to Gwen's security room, and they watch her security tapes - except, there is nothing to watch. Ten minutes before Cordy and Angel's shift, someone cut the electricity. While Gwen further investigates, Cordy tells Angel that he has to talk to Connor. Angel pushes her buttons, since it's nice for him to get to do it for a change.

Angel, Cordy, Gunn and Gwen arrive back at the hotel. Lorne shows them a diagram of what the Beast wants to assemble - it is a winged figure. The Beast uses the toy surprises he ripped out of three of the totems, and then the energy he sucked out of the other two. When Gwen notices the wings are metal, she tells the group to get her get close enough to melt them, provided they are even able to find the Beast. Fred and Wes emerge, and tell the group that they've come up with a solution - a portal. Gunn shakes his head - he is extremely bothered by this. Fred tries to calm Gunn down, but to no avail.

As the group gets ready to head out to find the Beast, Cordy's eyes go wide, and she gasps. She is having a vision - of a medieval battlefield covered in corpses. She sees the Beast watching the dead and dying. She describes the vision to Angel - she didn't get to see who the Beast was talking to, but they felt familiar. Like it was someone she knew. Cordy suggests they bring Connor into this - if he is connected to the Beast, he is the best person to track the Beast down.

Connor is lying on his bed reading a magazine when there is a knock on his door. He answers the door to find the Beast waiting for him. Connor runs back into the room and the Beast pursues him. They fight, but the Beast easily overpowers him, and throws him out the window. Connor falls five stories, and lands on the pavement in front of Angel's car. The Fang Gang piles out of the car, and Cordy kneels by Connor's side. Connor manages to gasp out that the Beast is upstairs. Cordy stays with Connor and the rest of the group heads upstairs to try and stop the Beast.

The Beast has combined the totems, and he begins chanting. The orb on the metal wings glows red then fades to black. Angel and company barge into the room. Angel and Gunn attack the Beast while Fred and Gunn begin chanting in a corner. Gwen tries to get to the metal wings, but the orb falls off of it, and rolls to the Beast's hooves.

Outside, Cordy has another vision - the same one she has been having before, but this time, she hears the Beast speak, and she knows who the Beast was talking to.

The Beast continues his chanting, until Angel and Gunn have maneuvered him into position. The air begins to glow as a portal forms.

Outside, the daylight begins to fade. Black tendrils begin to crawl across the surface of the sun, effectively blotting it out. Cordy experiences her vision from beginning to end, and sees Angelus standing bloody beside the Beast.

Angel and Gunn have pushed the Beast into the portal. They think they've won, until they notice the sun has been blotted out. Suddenly, the Beast appears behind them. He begins talking to Angel - he says that they don't need to be enemies, and then implores Angelus to join him. He picks up the orb, and swallows it before he leaves.

The group heads back down to the pavement where Connor and Cordy are waiting for them. The Beast knows Angelus. Cordy's visions weren't visions - they were memories of when she experienced Angelus' unlife when she was on a higher plane. Angel doesn't remember anything about his encounter with the Beast. Gunn realizes that when Mesektet said "The answer is among you" she was referring to Angelus. There is only one way for the group to figure out what the Beast is planning - they need Angelus.
