With the birth of Angel's son, many questions are brought to mind, including the question of the prophecy in the Aberjian scrolls from Season 1. Is Angel really the vampire with a soul the scrolls are referring to, or is it his son?
Personally, I believe the prophecies still refer to Angel. He already plays a pivotal role in the fight between good and evil. Wolfram and Hart even recognizes this, and won't allow anyone to kill him. He is protected, in a way. The main reason for my belief, however, is the fact that we still don't know why Angel was brought back from the Hell dimension Buffy sent him to. He spent much of "Amends" trying to find out why he had been brought back, and for what purpose. The First Evil and it's harbingers tried to convince Angel that they brought him back, by showing him what they believed to be his true nature. He was tormented in his dreams by visions of the victims he murdered. Yet, the end of the episode didn't bring a resolution to why Angel was brought back, and who brought him back.
Who brought Angel back was hinted in the first season of Angel. Doyle was sent to Angel with visions from "The Powers that Be," who were "white hats." As well, in "That Vision Thing," in the alternate dimension, Skip tells Angel that he smells like one that works for TPTB. This suggests that Angel was brought back for good.
When Wesley finally discovered that "shanshu" meant Angel was going to live until he died, the gang took this very seriously. Suddenly, they began keeping track of demons they slew, and demons that were around. Of course, when Angel prematurely slew a "good" demon that was protecting a pregnant woman, Angel realized his redemption was not about keeping score.
Wesley: Good idea. Start over with a fresh slate.
Angel: Actually, we're starting over with no slate.
Wesley: Of course. We shouldn't be keeping score. We're not running a race - we're doing a job - one soul at a time.
Angel was managing, still wondering what Wolfram and Hart brought back in the box, when he began to have trouble sleeping. Lo and behold, Wolfram and Hart brought back Darla. All of a sudden, Angel was less sure of who he was, and what his path to redemption was. He backslid into darkness. He fired Cordy, Wes and Gunn, and terrorized Darla and Dru. Then he let the two of them feast on a gathering of Wolfram and Hart lawyers. Angel's already rocky path to redemption became rockier still. When he finally had his "epiphany," he had to win back the trust of Cordy, Wes and Gunn. But, he learned something new about his purpose as well.
When Kate was fired from the police squad, she went home, drank back some alcohol and took a bunch of pills. In her drunken state, she called Angel. And Angel came to save her. He burst into her rooms, and rescued her. But, she never invited him in before. Some greater power was at work.
Angel: Well, I guess I kinda - worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if - nothing we do matters, - then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. - I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward - finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it.
Kate: I'm okay. - Anyway, I'm not headed towards another pillathon. - I'm very grateful. - I never thought you'd come for me, but... I got cut a huge break and I believe... - I don't know what I believe, but I - have - faith. - I think maybe we're not alone in this.
Kate: Because I never invited you in.
As well, in the same episode (Epiphany), the Host revealed to Angel that the Wolfram and Hart lawyers he left for Dru and Darla to feast upon were already slated to die. Whether or not Angel was there.
Now, back to Angel's son. Currently, he's not a vampire. He has a heartbeat and a soul. So, at this moment in time, he cannot be the vampire with a soul the Aberjian scrolls talk about. As well, Angel will do everything in his power to prevent his son from being turned, as will Cordy, Gunn, Fred, Lorne and Wesley. There still remains the question of whether or not the baby will still be protected by TPTB now that it has been born. And, the million dollar question which is "what purpose will the baby serve." Will the baby play a role in Angel's path to redemption? Only time will tell.
